Being born in San Antonio – a unique and culturally diverse city - and growing up in the Texas Hill Country town of Kerrville – a distinctively beautiful environment and a magnet for artists - perhaps set the stage for Michael Gillespie’s interest in the arts. Even though he showed some talent for drawing as a youngster, he studied music in college and directed church choirs for 9 years. Wanting to develop his visual arts skills, he obtained an additional degree in art. After moving to Dallas to do commercial illustration, he began to pursue his primary interest, portrait painting. He studied in workshops with noted artists such as Daniel Greene, Paul Leveile, and Ramon Kelly, and undertook several art museum study trips to Europe. He also began to paint outdoor landscapes as often as he could. Another of his interests is small town Texas scenes., having driven through many of them while traveling across the state.
He began to get portrait commissions, and has done several for his alma mater, Howard Payne University. Other portraits have been commissioned by the Texas Ranger Museum and the Dallas Scottish Rite Hospital. He has continued to direct church choirs part time, and has tried combining music and painting by interpreting some classical compositions with abstract paintings.
In conjunction with his painting, Michael also teaches at Dallas Baptist University and in his home studio.
It’s no surprise, given his background, that some of his favorite subjects to paint are the Texas Hill Country, scenes from his travels in Europe, and people, which he has always had a gift for capturing on canvas or paper.
